West African states strengthen security cooperation as foreign military strategies fail in Sahel

Nigeria's Defence Minister Christopher Musa stressed strong ties with Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger as essential for counter-terrorism, speaking to TRT Africa this week. This follows Niger's Foreign Minister Bakary Yaou Sangare highlighting trust and political dialogue as keys to coordinated action at the Dakar forum on April 21.

The Alliance of Sahel States, formed less than two years ago, now fields a 6,000-troop joint force with integrated command structures enabling coherent ground operations. Meanwhile, Senegal and Mali have intensified joint patrols in border areas like Kayes since launching coordinated operations in Diboli in 2025. Benin and Nigeria have also stepped up bilateral security collaboration along their shared border.

These locally driven efforts contrast sharply with years of foreign military involvement in the Sahel, where insecurity continued to expand despite external support. For Nigerians, successful regional cooperation could directly reduce terrorist threats spilling over from neighboring countries, particularly benefiting border communities.

With foreign strategies proven ineffective, will this African-led security approach finally deliver the stability that externally imposed solutions have failed to achieve across the region?
