WHO and African Union's public health agency launched a $518-million joint plan on Friday to tackle the Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo and neighboring countries. The six-month plan (June-November 2026) focuses on emergency coordination, surveillance, laboratory testing, infection prevention, clinical care, and community engagement.

The outbreak, declared on May 15 in northeastern DRC, has grown to 381 confirmed cases including 64 deaths in DRC. Across the border in Uganda, there have been 16 confirmed cases with one death. The rare Bundibugyo strain is concentrated in Ituri province, which accounts for 90% of confirmed cases and 76% of deaths.

This outbreak is larger than previous Bundibugyo outbreaks in 2007 and 2012. Unlike other Ebola strains, there are no approved vaccines or treatments for the Bundibugyo variant. With Nigeria and other West African countries having experienced major Ebola outbreaks in the past, how should regional health authorities balance preparedness versus panic over this developing situation?
