The World Health Organisation (WHO) has urged stronger global collaboration and sustained investment in science to tackle emerging health threats, marking World Health Day 2026 under the theme, "Together for health. Stand with science."

WHO highlights significant health progress: global maternal mortality has declined over 40% since 2000, and under-five deaths have fallen more than 50%. Scientific advances have transformed diseases like high blood pressure, cancer, and HIV into more manageable conditions.

However, the organisation warns that health threats are increasing due to climate change, environmental degradation, geopolitical tensions, and shifting demographics, straining health systems and raising risks of new epidemics. Director-General Tedros Ghebreyesus emphasised vaccines, penicillin, and the human genome mapping as life-saving scientific achievements.

Nigeria's First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu, echoed the call, stressing innovation, collaboration, and the One Health approach—which connects human, animal, plant, and environmental health—as central to healthier outcomes. The WHO is convening global forums, including a G7 One Health Summit, to strengthen partnerships across governments, scientists, and communities.

As climate and conflict reshape health risks, how will you balance personal health choices with supporting evidence-based policies and community-level science initiatives in your area?
