WHO has declared the Bundibugyo Ebola outbreak in Democratic Republic of Congo and Uganda a Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC), the organization's second-highest alert level. The outbreak began in April in Mongbwalu, Ituri Province, DRC, with 246-336 suspected cases and 80-88 deaths confirmed. The Bundibugyo strain poses particular concern as there is no approved vaccine or treatment available.

Cases have spread across three health zones in DRC and crossed into Uganda, with confirmed cases in Kampala raising fears of wider transmission. WHO Director-General Tedros Ghebreyesus emphasized the high regional risk due to population mobility and trade links between Central and East African countries. The outbreak was first detected in a health worker who developed symptoms including fever, hemorrhaging, vomiting and intense malaise on April 24.

Public health experts warn Nigeria remains vulnerable due to strong travel, trade and migration links with countries in Central and East Africa. Nigeria's public health system, already grappling with Lassa fever, cholera and meningitis outbreaks, could face additional pressure. WHO advises against border closures, recommending instead strengthened traveler screening and contact tracing. How prepared is your community for potential public health emergencies given Nigeria's history containing Ebola in 2014?
