WHO has declared the Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo a Public Health Emergency of International Concern after more than 900 suspected cases, with 101 confirmed infections and 220 suspected deaths reported. The Bundibugyo strain has also spread to neighboring Uganda, which now has seven confirmed cases and one death.

The outbreak is centered in Ituri Province, a conflict-ridden region where nearly five million people live amid insecurity and humanitarian crisis. WHO Director-General Tedros Ghebreyesus raised the national risk level to "very high" due to rapid transmission and lack of approved vaccines or therapeutics for this strain.

Violence is forcing people to flee, including health workers, severely hampering contact tracing efforts. Community mistrust is also complicating containment. WHO has released $3.9 million in emergency funds and is setting up a continental Incident Management Support Team to coordinate response.

Despite challenges, WHO and partners continue operations in hard-to-reach areas while providing comprehensive healthcare services to build trust. More infections are expected in the coming days as response efforts intensify.

With Nigeria's proximity to affected countries and its large population density, this outbreak poses significant public health risks. Travelers from affected regions should monitor for symptoms, and health authorities should enhance screening at entry points.
