WHO reports Middle East conflict has displaced over 4 million people and triggered 135 verified attacks on healthcare facilities across the region. The situation report released 9 April shows Iran with 3.2 million displaced persons and 2,362 deaths, while Lebanon faces 1.4 million displaced and 1,739 deaths. Attacks on healthcare are escalating with Lebanon averaging 2.9 incidents daily over the past five weeks, resulting in 158 injuries and 57 deaths among health workers and patients. The organization warns that strikes on water desalination facilities risk creating water shortages and disease outbreaks in a region where several countries depend on desalination for 70-100% of drinking water. Despite a two-week ceasefire in Iran providing some relief, the WHO has launched a $30 million funding appeal covering Lebanon, Iraq, Iran, Jordan and Syria for the period between March and August, emphasizing that humanitarian access and operational space remain critical challenges. The escalating humanitarian crisis is expected to have economic and security implications globally, including potential impacts on oil markets and regional stability that affect Nigeria's economy.
