WHO reports Africa had 75% of July mpox cases; vaccine stockpile starts Sept
WHO says Africa accounted for about 75% of confirmed mpox cases reported globally in July, with 1,370 cases and seven deaths across 32 countries. Eleven African countries recorded active transmission between July 6 and August 16, accounting for 1,153 cases and all deaths, with Madagascar, Angola, Kenya, the DRC and Cameroon reporting the highest numbers. Transmission continues mainly through close physical contact, including sexual spread, household contact and community outbreaks, while all clades of the virus remain in circulation.
This matters because Africa remains the epicenter of mpox even after WHO ended the global public health emergency in September 2025. Nigeria, as part of the continent, faces importation risk through travel or close contact with infected individuals. Awareness of how mpox spreads helps prevent infection, especially as health systems also contend with other outbreaks like the Bundibugyo Ebola surge in the DRC.
The WHO launched a global mpox vaccine stockpile on August 27, funded by Gavi and set to begin operations later in September. Countries can access vaccines through this mechanism coordinated by the International Coordinating Group on Vaccine Provision. Individuals should avoid close contact with anyone showing signs of mpox, practice good hand hygiene, and follow guidance from national health authorities. Staying informed via official channels helps you protect yourself and your community.
