WHO warns Ebola outbreak in DR Congo spreading fast, threatens regional spread
WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus warned on Tuesday that the Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo is spreading at an unprecedented pace, with over 2,300 deaths out of nearly 5,000 recorded cases, marking the country’s deadliest outbreak since it was declared on May 15, 2026. This is the 17th Ebola epidemic recorded in the DRC.
The WHO warned that the risk of further national and international spread remains high. Given regional travel and trade links, this raises concerns for Nigeria about potential importation of cases and the need for preparedness.
The WHO said additional recommendations will be issued to the DRC and other countries as containment efforts intensify. Nigerians should watch for these forthcoming guidelines from health authorities.
