On Monday, October 18, 2026, the World Bank announced a new strategy to boost connectivity and make digital access more affordable in developing countries. President Ajay Banga said digital technology can help create jobs and make scarce resources go further, but realizing this requires reliable connectivity, affordable devices, digital skills, and useful services.

For Nigeria, where only 23% of people use the internet compared to 94% in high-income nations, the timing is critical. The Bank noted that while 1.2 billion people will reach working age in developing countries over the next 10-15 years, economies are projected to create just 420 million jobs. Improved digital access could help bridge this gap.

The strategy aims to support connectivity infrastructure, lower the cost of entry-level smartphones and broadband services, widen access to digital services, and explore targeted uses of artificial intelligence. While specific implementation details and funding for Nigeria are not yet announced, the initiative could lead to cheaper devices, better broadband, digital skills programs, and AI-related opportunities.

Will you take advantage of upcoming digital skills and affordable connectivity initiatives to improve your job prospects or business?
