World Cup 2026: ‘Go to Nigeria’ – Gaye advises Ghana on new coach
Sport World Cup 2026: ‘Go to Nigeria’ – Gaye advises Ghana on new coach Published on April 10, 2026 By John Owen Nwachukwu Respected African football expert Mamadou Gaye has advised the Ghana Football Association not choose a European coach for the 2026 World Cup. Gaye said Ghana should look for experienced African coaches from Nigeria and other top footballing nations within the continent. Sixty-two days before the World Cup begins, Ghana has not found a new coach. Otto Addo was fired after a series of bad results. A 2-1 loss to Germany in a friendly game on March 30 was the last straw. European coaches like Hervé Renard, Felix Sanchez Bas, Carlos Queiroz, Paulo Bento, and Fernando Santos are being considered for the Black Stars coaching position. Gaye told Ghana not to hire a foreign coach, saying that the choice would help European managers more than African football. On Thursday, during an interview on SuperSport’s Soccer Africa, Gaye said, “The biggest mistake Ghana could make, and something no one will ever forgive them for, is bringing a European coach to the World Cup, helping him improve his resume, and then sending him back to Africa. Once the World Cup is over, he’ll just vanish. “If they don’t have someone from Ghana who can do the job, let them go to Nigeria, let them go to South Africa, let them go to Ivory Coast. The qualified coaches are there. “There are a lot of skilled African coaches who have a lot of experience.” Ghana has been drawn in Group L for the 2026 World Cup, along with England, Panama, and Croatia. Their first game will be on June 17 against Panama.
