The World Bank will approve a $500 million loan to Nigeria by March 30, 2026, aimed at boosting agricultural productivity and strengthening key value chains. The funding, provided through the World Bank's concessional lending arm (IDA), will be deployed across four components: integrating smallholder farmers into competitive value chains, modernizing production systems, strengthening policy frameworks to attract private investment, and improving project coordination. This loan comes amid Nigeria's rising external debt, which reached $46.98 billion as of June 30, 2025, with the World Bank Group accounting for $19.39 billion. The project addresses Nigeria's critical challenges of creating jobs and tackling food and nutrition insecurity.
