WTO raised its 2026 global merchandise trade growth forecast to 3.9%, up from 1.9% projected in March, citing resilience driven by AI investment despite Middle East conflict disruptions. The report, released October 8, 2026, also projects 4.1% growth in 2027. Crude oil exports from the Middle East fell about 24% and LNG shipments dropped 47% in the first half of 2026, but alternative producers limited the global decline to roughly 6% for oil and 1% for LNG. Meanwhile, AI infrastructure investment is set to rise at least 30% in 2026, with another 10‑20% increase expected in 2027.

For Nigeria, the outlook is encouraging: Africa’s exports are forecast to grow 5.6% in 2026, led by Asian demand, while imports could rise 8.9%. In Q2 2026, Nigeria’s merchandise trade reached N41.44 trillion, up 5.61% year‑on‑year, with exports making up 65.2% (N27.02 trillion) and imports N14.42 trillion. Earlier, the trade surplus jumped 340.88% to N7.55 trillion in Q1 2026 per Nairametrics.

What does this mean for you? Nigerian exporters may find stronger demand in Asia and Africa, while importers should watch for potential price shifts from volatile Middle East energy supplies. Consider exploring AI‑related goods or services, as global demand for semiconductors and servers grows. Stay informed about trade policies that could benefit non‑oil sectors, and think about diversifying markets beyond traditional partners.
