Salisu Tanko Yakasai, former Kano governorship candidate of the Peoples Redemption Party in the 2023 elections, warned on X that the emerging split between Nigeria’s opposition blocs—the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and the Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC)—could replicate the 2023 dynamics that favoured President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. He noted that Peter Obi and Musa Kwankwaso’s alignment with the NDC, alongside the ADC’s formation, risks dividing opposition votes and boosting Tinubu’s chances in the 2027 general election.

Yakasai argued that a united opposition might face legal or political hurdles keeping it off the ballot, while two separate platforms could complicate any government attempt to sideline them, likely resulting in both contesting and a divided opposition at the presidential level. He added that, despite the split, the ADC and NDC could still make significant gains in National Assembly races, particularly across the North and East.

Despite his warning, Yakasai reaffirmed his loyalty to the ADC and urged both camps to reduce tensions and remain open to future cooperation, noting that "politics has a way of bringing unlikely partners back to the table." Readers should monitor whether the opposition manages to unite or stays divided, as this will shape the 2027 election outcome and affect their voting decisions.
