Youth leaders back tax reforms, warn vested interests against disruption
The Ethnic Youth Leaders Council has publicly endorsed Nigeria's new tax law, declaring it essential for economic recovery and fiscal sustainability. The council issued a statement on Tuesday, January 14, 2026, warning that it will actively resist any attempts to undermine the reform process.
According to the group, the reforms are designed to widen the revenue base, promote equity, and reduce Nigeria's reliance on borrowing. They allege that resistance is coming from vested interests who profited from the old, inefficient system and are uncomfortable with new measures promoting transparency and accountability.
The council stated that any attempt to frustrate implementation is "against the collective national interest" and vowed not to "fold its arms" while policies beneficial to young people face sabotage. They urged Nigerians to address concerns through constructive dialogue rather than obstruction.
The youth leaders called on security agencies to remain vigilant and protect lawful processes from disruption, emphasizing that Nigeria's economic transformation requires collective effort. The council also announced plans to mobilize and sensitize stakeholders nationwide in support of the reforms.
