Former Strasbourg forward Simon Zenke has identified Emmanuel Fernandez and Chibuike Nwaiwu as the two standout performers in Nigeria’s 2-1 international friendly victory over Iran on Friday in Antalya, Turkey. Both players entered the match as substitutes, replacing Semi Ajayi and Igoh Ogbu respectively.

Zenke told Footy-Africa: "I was particularly impressed with the two players – Fernandez and Nwaiwu – who came on as substitutes. The reality now is that Nigeria has a variety of options in central defence, and that is a very positive development."

This signals growing depth in Nigeria’s central defensive positions, offering coach José Peseiro more tactical flexibility for competitive fixtures. Fernandez and Nwaiwu’s impactful cameos suggest they could push for regular selection in the Super Eagles squad.

For Nigerian football followers, this indicates promising defensive talent emerging beyond the established names. For the team’s technical crew, it creates healthy selection dilemmas that strengthen overall squad resilience. Are these new options the genuine future of Nigeria’s defense, or merely friendly-match standouts?
