ZLP chairman Dan Nwanyanwu cautioned President Bola Tinubu that some supporters are engaging in excessive political activities that alienate Nigerians and could damage Tinubu's public image ahead of the 2027 general election. Speaking live on Channels Television's Politics Today on Tuesday, Nwanyanwu said these supporters are 'going overdrive,' making people lose interest in the president. He warned that such actions could affect Tinubu's re-election chances, even as he acknowledged his own interest in the presidency. Nwanyanwu also dismissed claims that the 2027 election outcome is predetermined, insisting opposition parties will actively contest the polls and that 'there will be a contest in this election. It is not over.'

This warning highlights internal tensions within Tinubu's support base that could undermine his popularity despite the APC's strong nationwide presence. The party currently controls 31 of 36 states and has benefited from opposition defections, yet faces criticism over economic hardships like rising inflation and cost of living. Nwanyanwu's remarks suggest that even allies see a risk of overzealous supporters eroding public goodwill, which opposition figures may exploit in their campaigns.

Readers should note that the 2027 election remains open, with Tinubu, Atiku Abubakar (ADC), and Peter Obi (Nigerian Democratic Congress) as the top contenders—mirroring the 2023 race. While Tinubu secured the APC ticket on May 24, 2025, and continues to defend his economic reforms, the opposition is mobilizing to challenge the ruling party. Voters may want to assess how campaign tactics influence public perception and consider the opposition's readiness to contest the election.
